CHICAGO, April 21, 2025 — The Trump Administration intends to announce a plan on Tuesday afternoon to phase out the use of petroleum-based artificial food in the nation’s food supply.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said the initiative will be detailed at a press conference scheduled in conjunction with one of its subordinate agencies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
A federal plan to discourage or ban the use of artificial dyes in foods has been expected since Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., was confirmed as Donald Trump’s Secretary of HHS. The often-controversial critic of the U.S. food manufacturing business has been an avid opponent of allowing the use of artificial agents to color food. But to date he has largely left those efforts to the states, several of which have banned specific food dyes.
